Bionicon Update...

photo: fergy

Got the following from Michael at www.gearsurfer.com. Looks like he's ridden the Bionicon Edison and the new Ironwood on the 'shore, and has some good things to say about both. Here's his message:

Hi MG,

I've ridden the Edison and the Ironwood on the Shore now a couple of times. The geometry adjustment is such a great idea and it works really well. I love the Edison because it really pedals up like a XC bike and it feels like a light freerider on the way down. It's amazing how much of a difference the change in geometry makes. I put up my experience with both bikes on www.gearsurfer.com. For me, the Edison seems to be the ideal Shore bike if you're not into shuttling or you can't shuttle. For the Shore I would ride it with a setup similar to the Ironwood: double chain ring and bash guard, wider handle bars and bigger tires. It would still be very easy to pedal it up but it would handle the tough trails with a little bit more confidence and traction. I can't wait to take it out on some longer rides in Squamish and Whistler.

Cheers,

Michael

The chrome helmet seals the deal.

Hi mg,

thanks for putting up my web address on your blog! I hope you guys get out there to ride before the cold gets you. Vancouver has been covered in snow since Saturday and traffic has been a gong show. I rode the Edison to work on Monday and the commute took me about 2 hours for 19km. It's usually an easy 50 min bike ride. It was pretty hard work but also a lot of fun. If we get even more snow I'll try to ride the Ironwood to work :-)

hey michael -- the cold got us last night! yesterday at 7am it was 60 degrees, today at 7am it was 22 degrees... quite a difference.

i don't know about you, but i always feel safer on my bike than in the car when the snow is heavy. perhaps it's the fact that i stick to side streets, away from traffic, but it always seems less crazy to be on my bike and the master of my own destiny.

riding the ironwood to work would be funny... you'd have to snap a pic of you walking into the office with your 40-plus pound freeride commuter!

I also think that riding my bike is actually safer than taking the car when road conditions are cracy.
The good news is that the Ironwood is actually about 37 lbs. That's totally acceptable for a 8"/8" commuter. And on the way home I can take a route that follows some of the North Shore trails as well :-)

the north shore commute... must be just like heaven (sorry, i'm listening to the cure right now).

38 lbs isn't bad for an 8x8!! in fact that's pretty damn impressive. my 7x7 kona is about 5 pounds heavier...
