the current state of the Unit 2-9...

Check out the latest build on the Unit 2-9. 8 speeds - 34t front with a 12-32 xtr cassette. Good enough for Platte yesterday, though I'd have used a granny if I'd had one (typical January at Platte...).

N-Gear Jump Stop on the inside -- custom team MWC stainless guide on the outside.

I roll with mary - and I dig top mounts.

Hey, those washers aren't stock, are they? (Nope...:-)

Sweet dude. What fork is on the Dos Niner? Or is it forkless right now.

How's the Unit with gears and a big fork compare to the Salsa?

3p0 -- i look forward to riding with you too buddy, and you always keep up just fine. never worry about that with me.

redstone - i've got the dos in non-rideable mode right now, until i build a rear wheel and find myself an extra avid mech. disc. the x-vert super is on the front of it though. i actually like the dos with the steeper front-end the x-vert gives it, though the low bottom bracket height concerns me somewhat. i was already dragging pedals with the sc32 on there!

as far as how the unit 2-9 compares to the dos: in a nutshell it's steeper, a little rougher (since it's not a softail) and about a pound heavier. it's a super alert handler, but it's not unstable. i'm actually amazed it wasn't too steep -- and for some, it might be too steep. not me though. i think the dos is perhaps a touch more stable, but the kona turns quicker, and can change lines in the middle of a corner with the mere thought of it. for an experienced rider, i think it's just about perfect 'niner geometry, and i have to hand it to kona for having the guts to put such an aggressive bike into production. perhaps they didn't mean for it to measure out so steep, but regardless of their intent, the end result is pretty schweet, as the h-ball would say.

thad -- the washers were pirated from some old bontrager qr skewers. i had to drill them out a bit to let the bolts pass smoothly, but it's working fine. hopefully the sweet new unit 2-9 mohawk nutz will be available soon (danny, you out there?) and i'll be able to get an even better grip.

unfortunately that cluster isn't available on 8-speed, and i don't care to run 9 speed. i can push the gears just fine... it'll just make me stronger.
