Beautiful Day for a Bit of BACON...

The Platte River Posse -- Looks like we weren't the only "bikers" looking for a bite to eat at the Platte River State Park buffet Sunday morning...

The scenery sure is beautiful this time of year in Nebraska...

JP, Fob and DK head east down the Mopac with dreams of sweet bacon on their minds... It won't be long before they've got what they're after.

The new control center on my Fargo, consisting of an On One Mary bar, upside-down and a 100mm, zero-rise Salsa CroMoto SUL stem. Note the 'new' 8-speed rear end the bike is sportin' (indicated by the 8-speed thumb shifter), along with the mountain bike control center. For technical riding, it's definitely much better.
Lookin' down the trail...
At rest...
The view from the cockpit...

See ya' next time...

The Bacon Ride happens pretty much every Sunday during the cycling season. There's a different cast of characters each week, but that's just part of the fun. The pace varies from super mellow to a little bit hard, depending on who shows up. It takes off at roughly 6am (or 6:25am, as it was this past Sunday) from the Novartis Trailhead at 84th Street and Hazelwood Drive.

MG, looks good.

Can you estimate how far down the ends of your Mary's point. I'm looking for a measurement angle from a horizontal line to the flat section of the bar.

Looks very good MG. That is the same bar style I am building my Fargo up with only I have the Origin 8 Space bar. However, it looks like your flat section is much longer than on the Origin 8.

Can you measure the distance from the end of the bar to the middle of the first bend. I am needing a little more room for my Ergons and Dual control Shimano's.

Thanks!!

Thanks guys. Gnat, I set the angle of the bar up so that the ends of the bar are basically at the same angle as the stem extension (with a zero-rise stem). Doing the math, with a 70 degree head tube angle, would that put them at a 20 degree angle, or a 10 degree angle (split in half)? Oh, the math...

Maybe it's time for a trip to the hardware store for an angleometer... or whatever those things are called.

Captain Bob, it's funny you mention that flat section on the Origin 8... That's exactly the problem I have with their bars, it seems. Measured down the middle of the bar, I'm getting 8.5 inches from the end of the bar to the middle of the first bend. You'd need to shim a Mary to run with Dual Control, but that said, it'd be a sweet setup.

Good luck!!

Thanks MG. That's exactly what was hoping for. That's about 1 inch longer than the 8's.

You're welcome Cpt. You know, it's funny... An inch doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're on the bike, it sure feels like a lot. But then, five millimeters feels like a ton if you're talking about saddle height, for example, so it's all a matter of situation, I suppose. At the handlebar, those inches do add up to something significant. It's added leverage and I like it a lot.

Have a good one, my friend. Hope to get to go Fargoing with you at some point soon, perhaps also with our good buddies Gnat and G-Ted!

Cheers,
MG

Sounds like I will be meeting you soon MG. Very soon I hope. I also spoke to J & B and they just received the new Space Bar OR (off road) and the new design also incororated a longer flat section. The rep measured 8.5 inches from the end to the first bend. Should be a perfect duplicate of the Mary bar but labeled for off road.

My Fargo is almost complete and once done it just ridden which is what I need to do before my next trip.

Take care.

Thanks CB -- It'll be good to ride with you later this month. Good luck getting the rest of your Fargo put together!
