Here's what I did Saturday. Yeah, I hurt today...

The start of the 2007 24 Hours of Iowa

It was a good first day of September at the Seven Oaks Ski Area, near Boone, IA.... I'll let Cam Kirkpatrick take over the details, with his story that I found here, on the CyclingUpdate.com site:

Perfect weather and great trail conditions greeted 72 mountain bikers at
the start of the 24 Hours of Iowa on Saturday. 24 hours later we had a new
first time 24 hour solo champion. Squirrel (Brian Pottorff of Rasmussen
Bike Shop) took the early lead amongst the soloists at the gun and never
looked back. 18 laps later (126 grueling miles) an exhausted Squirrel
plunked down in his lawn chair in a heap with smile going from ear to ear.

Why was he smiling? Because he knew by 9am that he had a big enough lead
that he wouldn't have to go out and do anymore laps. It could also have had
something to do with $1,000 in cash first prize that he was about to
receive! Andrew Carney of Ames, Ia came home in 2nd place with a total of
15 laps. Apparent newcomer Jacob Espey followed in 3rd place. Jane Reissen
of Des Moines brought home the women's solo victory with a total of 7 laps.
Apparently Jane had such a huge lead before nightfall that she decided to
crack open a beer(s) and take a 7 hour break before beginning her next lap!

In the 12 hour solo race, Lincoln, Nebraska's Matt Gersib (Monkey Wrench /
Salsa Cycles) took advantage of his good form coming off of a great cross
country season in the Nebraska Psycowpath mountain biking series to bring
home the victory, followed by Oakley man Rob Versteegh of Des Moines.
Taylor Webb of Mercy Specialized rounded out the top three in 3rd.

In the team competition, the Rasmussen Bike Shop team of Cam Kirkpatrick,
Jed Gammell, Ben Garrett and Andy Lueck took the win with a total of 28
laps, followed by the All9Yards / Rasmussen Bike Shop team of Dave
Mable, Jason Alread, Brian Benson and Herb Hollwanger with a total of 26
laps. 3rd went to MBWC / Team 14 posse of Jeff Burnett, Brad Patty, Matt
Scotton and Brian DePenning with a total of 25 laps.

The fine folks of Singletrack Promotions would like thank all that came out
and "braved" the absolutely beautiful weather! Singletrack Promotions did
an outstanding job in putting together a great event, great trails, good
friends, mountain biking all night, camping, all you can eat pasta feed;
what more could a cyclist ask for?!

Full results will be posted shortly!

Way to rock it bro, sorry I didn't get a chance to chat with you afterwards. I had some business to attend to with my teammates!

See ya at Platte on 10/19!

Congrats, Matt. I think everyone was impressed with your stamina and riding in the 12 hour.

You mentioned the 12 hour at Manawa. I thought I had a conflict that weekend, but it looks clear. I'm interested...

Rode passed you this morning and when I got home and saw you just did a 12 hour solo I was impressed.

thanks for the kind words guys, but my ride was a side note to the incredible performance you put in, squirrel.

that's awesome that manawa's looking like it'll work out for both of you guys (bruce and squirrel). it'll be a super fun time, and the tabletop-flat manawa course will be welcome respite from the gnarly climbs at seven oaks.

squirrel -- you still thinking about joining us for the ponca 155 next week? hope so, but if not, i'll see ya' at manawa.

brandon, was that you on the GT LTS? if so, that thing is SWEET! i haven't seen one of those in that good of condition in a while. you were rippin' it out there too!

it's fun to ride bikes, and that fact brought a smile to my face innumerable times during the course of that 12-hour race saturday, and again as i did a couple of passes through wilderness park with mw, the Dark Night, rokke and maaaaaad mike johnson.

we're pretty lucky... life is good.

cheers,
mg

No that wasn't me. I was on my Marin Bolinas Ridge and Marin Jersey. When I saw you guys I wasn't rolling very fast because I was trying to figure out what happened to my derailleur when I hit a stump.

ok, yep... i remember seeing you. it was weird - i don't know if you heard me ring my bell, but right before we saw you i got a feeling someone was coming and gave it a ding ding.

bells are a good thing at wilderness park right now... use 'em and listen for 'em.

nice ride mg, way to bring home the bacon.

now let's ride and eat some bacon.

MG said...

amen brother! thanks mod.

are you comin' on the ponca 155? we'll be eatin' bacon on that one. that'd be epic if you could make it.

maybe i could bring a couple 'o pounds of bacon to the manawa 12-hour. that'd be rocket fuel for a solo effort, 'eh? i've been trying to talk squirrel, bruce brown and a couple of others from outta' town to come to manawa too.

are you gonna' race @ manawa, mod? hope so. but i suspect you're likely putting on the race, and that typically makes it hard to also ride in the race.

thanks again mod,
mg

Bravo! Next up is Manawa!

thanks cornbread. sorry to hear about your challenges at the dakota 5-0. i bet you'll be killin' it at manawa as a result.

manawa should be a good one too. we'll have some solid competition in the solo class, especially if squirrel shows up hot off his dominating 24-hour solo performance in Iowa.
